Once a dream whispered in secret now stands tall. That dream is the Parafia Świętej Łucji Dziewicy Męczennicy w Warszawie-Rembertowie. It is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to faith and perseverance.
Parafia Świętej Łucji in Warsaw’s Rembertów district holds a unique place. It is the only parish in Poland dedicated to Saint Lucy. Saint Lucy is the patron saint of those with eye ailments. People often come here seeking not just physical but also spiritual sight.
Let’s step back to the late 20th century. Rembertów was then under the shadow of Soviet military presence. Building a new church seemed impossible. Yet, faith found a way.
Ks. Ryszard Łapiński, a former resident and priest started a secret project. With Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński’s blessing, he began constructing a “garage” on his property in 1973. This garage was actually a chapel.
In 1974, the first Mass was celebrated. Cardinal Wyszyński declared a new parish would be established. The chapel was dedicated to Saint Lucy. This honored Ks. Łapiński’s mother.
Authorities demanded the building’s demolition. But the faithful of Rembertów stood guard. For two weeks, they maintained a prayerful vigil. The authorities relented. This miraculous preservation is commemorated by a statue of the Virgin Mary in front of the church.
Parafia Świętej Łucji was officially established in December 1974. Ks. Łapiński continued to expand the chapel. He faced penalties for unauthorized construction. He persisted undeterred.
A new church became necessary. Construction began in 1986. Cardinal Józef Glemp laid the cornerstone in 1987. It contained stones from the Holy Sepulchre and Saint Lucy’s tomb.
The church was consecrated by Bishop Kazimierz Romaniuk in 1993. Ks. Łapiński retired. Ks. Wacław Szcześniak continued his work.
The interior of Parafia Świętej Łucji is filled with wooden art. These pieces were created by Wojciech Bałos. They include Stations of the Cross, stained glass and the altar.
Today, Parafia Świętej Łucji serves a growing community. Once isolated by Soviet forces, Rembertów is now attracting young families. This church remains a beacon of faith and community. It is a testament to the enduring power of belief. The Parafia Świętej Łucji continues to offer solace and spiritual guidance. It welcomes all who seek it.
