How many churches do you think have moved locations multiple times? The Parafia św. Stanisława Biskupa i Męczennika na Woli has quite the story. It shifted its main location no fewer than four times.
This parish has deep roots. The Parafia św. Stanisława Biskupa i Męczennika na Woli was first mentioned in 1319. A document from Pope John XXII speaks of it as a filia or subsidiary of the parish of St. John the Baptist in Warsaw.
Around 1300, a chapel may have been built in Wola. For 300 years, it served as a subsidiary to the parish of St. John.
The parish was officially established on July 11 1611. Bishop Andrzej Opaliński founded it. But its history of relocations is interesting.
Its first location was the Church of St. Lawrence the Deacon and St. Stanisław the Bishop. It stood on Reduta Wolska. Today, it is just St. Lawrence Church. In 1834, Tsarist authorities converted it into an Orthodox church. Parishioners had to find a new place.
In 1858, they built a new church. This one was named after St. Stanisław Bishop and St. Lawrence Deacon. It was on Kościelna Street now Bema Street. In 1903, the parish center moved again. This time it was to the spacious Church of St. Stanisław Bishop on Wolska Street. Today, this is part of the parish of St. Wojciech.
The church on Bema Street was entrusted to the Redemptorist Fathers in 1917. They cared for it until 1927.
Cardinal Aleksander Kakowski made some changes in November 1923. He created a new parish of St. Lawrence from the old Wola parish. It included the Church of St. Lawrence and St. Stanisław. On April 1 1927, he created two more parishes. One was St. Stanisław Bishop with the church on Bema Street. The other was St. Wojciech with the church on Wolska Street.
The Church of St. Stanisław Bishop and Martyr and St. Lawrence Deacon was built between 1858 and 1860. Adam Michał Poraj-Biernacki funded it. Józef Orłowski designed it and Ks. Leopold Rzeczycki oversaw the construction. Bishop Henryk Plater consecrated it on October 14 1860. Archbishop Stefan Wyszyński consecrated it again on August 7 1949. The church has a Neo-Romanesque style. Inside is an image of Our Lady called Elekcyjna. It dates back to 1621.
The rectory was built between 1931 and 1933 by Ks. Seweryn Popławski. It was destroyed in 1945 but rebuilt. A vicarage was built in 1957 by Ks. J. Podbielski. An administrative and catechetical building was added between 1987 and 1992 by Ks. Jan Godzisz.
Today, the Parafia św. Stanisława Biskupa i Męczennika na Woli continues its mission. It offers daily masses and various services. These include Sunday devotions and periodic services. The parish also organizes events like the Day of the Sick. It truly is a pillar of faith in Wola.
Parafia św. Stanisława Biskupa i Męczennika invites everyone to join in prayer. The community gathers every Wednesday for the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. On Saturdays, they pray to Our Lady Elekcyjna. These traditions continue to strengthen the community.
So, next time you pass by, remember its long history. Remember the moves and the people who built it. The Parafia św. Stanisława Biskupa i Męczennika on Wola is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith and perseverance.
