Hidden within Warsaw’s Wilanów district lies Parafia św. Elżbiety w Warszawie-Powsinie. It’s more than just a parish church. It’s a sanctuary, a beacon of faith, a testament to centuries of devotion centered around the revered image of Matka Boża Tęskniąca (Our Lady of Longing). Parafia św. Elżbiety traces its origins back to 1398. Elżbieta Ciołkowa, a widow, commissioned a wooden church. It was dedicated to St. Andrew the Apostle and St. Elizabeth of Hungary. The formal establishment of the parish followed in 1410 by Bishop Wojciech. The original wooden structure, sadly, met its demise, likely during the Swedish Deluge. Another wooden church rose in its place. This too fell into disrepair. Then, in 1725, Elżbieta Sieniawska, a noblewoman, funded the construction of a magnificent brick church. This Baroque masterpiece, designed by Józef Fontana, forms the core of the Parafia św. Elżbiety we see today. The church we stand before is a product of various expansions and renovations. In the late 19th century, the church underwent significant expansion. Aisle and a transept were added. Two towers graced its facade. Later, in 1921, architect Józef Dziekoński further transformed the church. It gained its present appearance, with an extended nave and a separate bell tower. Inside Parafia św. Elżbiety, a priceless artifact resides. The miraculous image of Matka Boża Tęskniąca has drawn pilgrims for over 300 years. This 17th-century painting of unknown authorship depicts Mary with hands clasped in prayer. Her gaze directed heavenward. The painting exudes an aura of serenity and hope, inviting contemplation and prayer. The image has been adorned with a silver dress and gilded crown. Following a restoration in 1975, a new dress was crafted, emphasizing Mary’s face and hands. Since 1753, a painting of the Holy Trinity has veiled the image, only revealed during special services and Marian feasts. Parafia św. Elżbiety stands as a testament to enduring faith. The miraculous image of Matka Boża Tęskniąca continues to offer solace and hope. It serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring power of faith and devotion across generations.
