The history of the Parafia Miłosierdzia Bożego w Otwocku-Ługach is a testament to the resilience and faith of a community. This parish, established in 1989, stands as a beacon of devotion in the heart of Otwock-Ługi, a burgeoning neighborhood just outside of Warsaw. Its story began with the tireless efforts of Father Włodzimierz Jabłonowski, the parish priest of Matki Boskiej Królowej Polski in Otwock-Kresy, who recognized the need for a new pastoral center in the growing community of Ługi. In 1986, he began advocating for its creation, and in 1988, Bishop Kazimierz Romaniuk entrusted Father Jan Andrzejewski with the task of establishing a pastoral center in this new community.
The first step was a humble point of religious instruction in a residential building on Berlinga Street. But with the arrival of Cardinal Józef Glemp, the Primate of Poland, a transformative moment arrived. He granted permission for Mass to be held in the building, transforming it into a temporary chapel dedicated to Saint Honoratus Koźmiński. However, tragedy struck when this initial chapel was tragically destroyed by fire in December 1988, a devastating blow to the fledgling community. Yet, in the face of this setback, they rallied with unwavering faith and began reconstructing the chapel.
Within just a month, three Masses were held in the partially reconstructed chapel, with special services held for the act of vandalism. This marked a turning point in their journey. Over the next few years, they worked tirelessly, constructing a permanent church, a parish house, and establishing a small library. The cornerstone of the church was laid in 1992 by Bishop Kazimierz Romaniuk, who blessed it with a stone dedicated by Pope John Paul II. The church, a visible symbol of their enduring faith, stands today as a testament to their faith and commitment. It has been a center of religious life for the community, hosting weddings, baptisms, and other important milestones.
In 2000, the consecration of the church took place, marking a significant milestone. Throughout the years, the parish witnessed several changes in leadership but maintained a strong connection to local residents. The parish continues to offer spiritual guidance, offering various forms of religious instruction, and connecting the community through events and activities. Today, it flourishes as a vibrant center of faith and community, a legacy built upon resilience, faith, and the unwavering dedication of its parishioners.
