The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. We stand before the Parafia Matki Bożej Różańcowej in Warsaw a testament to faith resilience and history.
This isn’t just any church. The Parafia Matki Bożej Różańcowej holds a special place in the hearts of the Bródno neighborhood. Its story begins long before these very stones were laid. In 1913 Archbishop Aleksander Kakowski established the parish. A wooden church built in 1909 served the community. This earlier structure unfortunately didn’t survive World War II. It was completely destroyed in 1944.
The foundation for the present church was blessed in 1949 by Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. He laid the cornerstone in 1957. Construction was a long process. Until 1960 when the building was completed the church community held services in a chapel. This temporary space was located at ul Poborzańska 33. Cardinal Wyszyński consecrated the new church in 1964.
The Parafia Matki Bożej Różańcowej has seen significant changes over the years. In the 1980s the presbytery was remodeled. Marble adorned the pillars. The church’s organ was expanded. It went from 10 to 26 voices. A significant addition was the construction of a catechism house between 1985 and 1988. This was vital as around 6000 children and young people attended catechism classes.
Further improvements followed. In 1992 marble altars and a baptismal font were installed. Twelve new stained-glass windows brightened the interior. New pews were added. From 2006 onward the flooring in the church and sacristy was replaced. The steps outside were also renovated along with all the confessionals. A new Way of the Cross was installed outside the church. Plaques were erected to honor Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński.
The devotion of the parish is evident. A significant event was the crowning of the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary on May 15 2011. Exterior renovations concluded in 2012. A Chapel of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament was consecrated in 2014. This served as a votive offering for the parish’s 100th anniversary. A remarkable achievement came in 2015. Archbishop Henryk Hoser elevated the church to the status of a Diocesan Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary.
This is more than just a building. The Parafia Matki Bożej Różańcowej is a living community. It is a place of faith. It is a symbol of endurance. It reflects the spirit of Warsaw itself. The legacy of faith continues here. It’s a story etched in stone and in the hearts of all who worship within its walls.
