Hidden in the quiet village of Otwock Wielki stands Parafia Matki Bożej Ostrobramskiej. This unassuming church holds a story intertwined with the grand sweep of Polish history. Parafia Matki Bożej Ostrobramskiej wasn’t always here. Its story begins in 1981, with a simple need: a place for catechism classes. The local school director, Jan Siwek, with the help of the Karczew parish priest, secured a plot of land. Construction began in 1984, transforming this humble beginning into something more. The building evolved from a catechism hall and chapel into the church you see today. Parafia Matki Bożej Ostrobramskiej was officially established on March 25, 1999, by Bishop Kazimierz Romaniuk. It was carved from the larger Karczew parish. This marked a significant moment for the community, giving them their own spiritual home. The church serves four villages along the Vistula River: Kępa Nadbrzeska, Nadbrzeż, Otwock Wielki, and Wygoda. About 1560 parishioners call this church their own. The church itself is a testament to community effort. The stained-glass windows, crafted by Maciej Malicki and Mirosław Spirowski, add a touch of beauty. The Stations of the Cross, created by Krzysztof Łempicki, invite contemplation. Even the bell, cast at the Saturnin Skubiszyński foundry and donated by Roman Suchecki, represents a shared contribution. The church has continued to evolve since its establishment. A new altar, ambon, and baptismal font were added. New confessional boxes were installed. The roof was replaced and insulated, adorned with stained-glass images of the Evangelists surrounding the existing image of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn. A parking lot and green spaces now welcome visitors. Parafia Matki Bożej Ostrobramskiej stands as a symbol of resilience and community. It’s a place where history whispers from the nearby palace, where kings once plotted and where today, a vibrant community gathers in faith.
