Envision a tranquil building surrounded by trees. That is Paradise Mausoleum. It stands in the heart of Park Lawn Cemetery. This is no ordinary cemetery. Park Lawn Cemetery is one of Canada’s most historically significant cemeteries.
Paradise Mausoleum opened in 1999. Phase three was completed in 2016. This ensures a variety of options for years to come. Park Lawn Cemetery reflects the diverse ethnic and cultural heritage of the city.
Park Lawn Cemetery & Mausoleum opened in 1892. It was originally named Humbervale Cemetery. Local farmers owned it. It was sold in 1912 and again in 1915. The Park Lawn Cemetery Company bought it in 1915. Then it was renamed Park Lawn Cemetery.
The cemetery spans over 73 acres. These rolling park-like grounds provide a tranquil retreat. Many prominent Canadians rest here. The cemetery offers ground burials. It also has a mausoleum for above-ground interments and cremation urns.
Park Lawn Cemetery is managed by Park Lawn Limited Partnership. This group runs six non-denominational cemeteries in Toronto. The cemetery holds approximately 22000 graves.
Despite its serene appearance, Park Lawn Cemetery has faced challenges. In 1995, part of the cemetery was rezoned. This allowed the construction of a condominium building. Lot owners opposed the building. The Ontario Municipal Board approved the project.
The cemetery suffered from vandalism twice. These incidents occurred in 1990 and 2006. Youths damaged or toppled several hundred stones. They were later convicted.
Park Lawn Cemetery also holds a mass grave. This grave contains the remains of 75 “home children” from Britain. These children were sent to Canada.
The cemetery also contains war graves. Ninety-six Commonwealth service personnel are buried here. Nineteen are from World War I. Sixty-seven are from World War II.
Many notable figures are interred here. These include athletes, politicians, musicians and businesspersons. Harold Ballard and Conn Smythe are among the athletes. Rob Ford rests here. Jeff Healey is also interred here. Sir Henry Pellatt of Casa Loma is buried here.
