Is it just me or does the air smell of woodsmoke and adventure near Papatahi Hut? Papatahi Hut is nestled in Remutaka Forest Park. This serviced hut offers a welcome respite to trampers. It stands ready to embrace those who venture into Wellington’s wild heart.
Papatahi Hut is a popular site. Booking well in advance is essential to secure a spot. Imagine arriving after a long trek. You find the hut locked, awaiting your arrival. This ensures sole occupancy for your group.
Inside Papatahi Hut, you will find basic comforts. There is a cooker, pots, pans, crockery and cooking utensils. A wood heater promises warmth on chilly evenings. Cold tap water is available but requires boiling before use. Composting toilets are also provided.
However, remember to pack essentials. Candles are needed for lighting. Toilet paper is not supplied. These small details ensure a comfortable stay.
Accessing Papatahi Hut requires a bit of planning. The hut is a 3 hour 30 minute walk from the Catchpool car park. The route follows the Orongorongo and Big Bend Tracks. Be warned though. The journey involves several river crossings.
The Orongorongo River is not safe to cross in all conditions. Flash floods are common. Never attempt a crossing if the river is flooded, rising, or if rain is forecast. Your safety is paramount. The track from the Catchpool car park involves walking along the Orongorongo Track. Then it follows the Orongorongo River. After the Orongorongo Track, follow the marked Big Bend Track. Walk for about 1 hour to its junction with the Whakanui Track. You will then enter the riverbed and follow the Orongorongo River upstream.
There are approximately four crossings of the Orongorongo River. This number can vary. The river constantly reroutes in floods. As you move up the riverbed note the Matthews Stream fan. Also note Mount Matthews Track on the true left. Finally observe a large slip face on the true left.
Look for the large orange triangle and DOC sign on the true right of the river. It is near the entrance to an old 4WD track at coordinates 1769113.65, 5423258.07. Climb the stairs and follow the marked track to Papatahi Hut.
Fees for Papatahi Hut vary depending on the season. Off-peak rates are $100 per night for up to 10 people. This applies from 9 February to 25 December. Peak rates are $120 per night from 26 December to 8 February.
