Why would a dove choose a simple man from the countryside to lead the Roman Church? We are standing before the Papa Fabiano Statue, a towering tribute to a humble man who became a powerful Pope. Legend says that in the year 236, after days of debate, the church elders couldn’t agree on a new pope. Then, a dove descended upon Fabian, a farmer with no religious background. This was seen as a sign from the Holy Spirit, instantly making Fabian the Pope. His papacy was a time of peace, allowing the church to flourish. Fabian organized the burgeoning church, dividing Rome into districts and appointing deacons to manage them. He even sent missionaries to Gaul, spreading the faith far beyond Rome. He also had the bodies of martyred popes returned and buried properly. Sadly, this period of peace didn’t last. The Emperor Decius began persecuting Christians. Fabian, a staunch defender of his faith, refused to renounce his beliefs. He was imprisoned and died a martyr in 250. He may have started as a humble farmer, but Papa Fabiano’s courage and dedication made him a pillar of the early Church, his story echoing through the ages.
