Heard of a woman whose hair flows into the colors of a flag? That’s Panna wolna Mural. This mural stands as a powerful artistic statement against war. It is located on Radzymińska Street 140 in Warsaw’s Targówek district.
Andrzej Pągowski designed Panna wolna Mural. He was inspired by women he saw at the Polish-Ukrainian border. These women carried the heavy burden of family during conflict. So Pągowski wanted to honor them. He created a universal symbol of freedom.
Panna wolna translates to “Free Woman”. The mural depicts a woman’s head. Her hair forms the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag. Also, the artwork includes fingers in a victory sign. A white dove symbolizes peace.
Originally, Pągowski considered naming it “Panna Ukraina”. However, he wanted a broader, timeless message. He wanted Panna wolna to represent any woman affected by war. The mural is a tribute to their strength.
The Panna wolna Mural covers 130 square meters. A female artist from Ukraine helped paint it. This added another layer of meaning to the project. Pągowski hoped the mural would symbolize the fight for freedom. He also wished for a quick end to the war in Ukraine.
Małgorzata Kwiatkowska, the mayor of Targówek, spoke at the unveiling. She expressed admiration for Ukrainian women fleeing the war. Kwiatkowska assured them they were not alone. She acknowledged their inner strength.
The creation of the Panna wolna Mural involved many people. Grupa RW – MalujemyMurale.pl executed the painting. EcoEvolution.org also supported the project. They saw art as a way to protest. It also helps to cross language barriers.
A fundraiser accompanied the mural’s creation. It supported the Humanitarian Aid Center in Szegini. This center aids Ukrainians near the border. After the war, it will help rebuild the area. Centers in three Polish cities will support refugees, too. They will assist with job searching.
