Gazing at the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, one can almost hear echoes of the past. This Romanesque church, nestled in the Záběhlice district of Prague, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary traces its origins back to the 12th century. Around 1125, the first stones were laid, marking the beginning of its long life. During the 14th century, the church underwent a transformation, embracing a Romanesque-Gothic style. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary then served as a parish church, a spiritual center for the local community. Disaster struck in the 19th century. The original Romanesque tower, a defining feature of the church’s silhouette, was destroyed by lightning. Between 1876 and 1880, a Neo-Romanesque tower rose in its place. Inside the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a beautiful altar painting captures the eye. The painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary, created in 1861, adds a touch of artistry to the sacred space. The church bells also have their own story to tell. Two of the bells, dating back to 1876, bear inscriptions that recount the church’s history. A third bell, cast in 1889, completes the trio. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary has also undergone periods of restoration. Major repairs took place in 1948. In 2000, the facade was renewed with the support of Prague 10. Today, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary stands as a testament to its enduring spirit. It is a cultural monument, a cherished piece of Prague’s heritage.
