On a crisp autumn day in 1420, Pankrácké náměstí wasn’t a square at all. It was a battlefield. King Sigismund’s forces clashed with Hussite defenders in a struggle for Vyšehrad. This clash, known as the Battle of Vyšehrad, forever marked Pankrácké náměstí. The small settlement of Krušina, present since the 12th century, was destroyed in the fighting. Centuries passed, and Pankrácké náměstí slowly emerged. Officially established in 1931, the square’s name reflects the area’s earlier history, linking it to the settlement of Pankrác. This cluster of houses centered around the Church of St. Pankrác in the early 19th century. Pankrác later merged with Nusle, eventually becoming part of Prague in 1922. Pankrácké náměstí continued to evolve. The construction of the Nusle Bridge, originally called the Klement Gottwald Bridge, in 1973 dramatically reshaped the landscape. This two-tiered bridge carries the north-south highway and, below, the C metro line. The imposing Palace of Culture, now the Congress Centre, further transformed Pankrácké náměstí. Opened in 1981, this grand building hosted the 16th Congress of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. Today, Pankrácké náměstí remains a dynamic space. Roads and pedestrian walkways crisscross the square, connecting different parts of Prague. The Congress Centre continues to draw visitors. The echoes of history, from the Battle of Vyšehrad to the Communist era, resonate within this bustling urban square.
