The monument “Mokotów Walczy 1944” is a tribute. It honors those who fought and fell in Mokotów. This area saw intense combat during the Warsaw Uprising. The monument stands in Park im. gen. Gustawa Orlicz-Dreszera. It is a place of remembrance and reflection.
Mokotów faced unique challenges during the uprising. Professor Ryszard Brzozowski noted the area’s vulnerability. Mokotów had fewer large buildings for defense. The eight-week defense of Mokotów was a testament to the insurgents’ courage. They were unprepared for war but fought valiantly.
Wojciech Milic emphasized Mokotów’s specific character. Sixty percent of the district was built up. The rest was open space. The insurgents were not ready for field battles. The peak of the fighting occurred at the end of August 1944. The battleground was twice the size of the entire Śródmieście.
The monument also commemorates a tragic event. After Mokotów’s capitulation, insurgents tried to escape. On September 27, 1944, they mistakenly emerged from a sewer. They surfaced near the German gendarmerie headquarters on Dworkowa Street.
Despite the surrender agreement, the Germans murdered them. The agreement guaranteed their treatment as prisoners of war. The Pamięci żołnierzy AK Powstańców Mokotowa is a stark reminder of this violation. It honors those who were killed.
A striking obelisk marks the site on Dworkowa Street. It is popularly known as the “Monument of the Executed Insurgents.” Its pylons surround a symbolic sewer entrance. It commemorates nearly 140 Warsaw insurgents. Most belonged to the AK “Baszta” regiment.
Eugeniusz Ajewski designed the monument. It was unveiled 40 years after the tragic events. Aleksander Kowalewski “Longinus” lit the first candle. He was a soldier of the K-4 company of the “Baszta” regiment. He survived the execution on Dworkowa Street.
The annual “Marsz Mokotowa” commemorates the Warsaw Uprising. It honors those who fought. The march proceeds along Puławska Street. It ends at the obelisk dedicated to the 119 murdered insurgents on Dworkowa Street. The march passes a plaque. This plaque commemorates Mirosław Jezierski “Karnisz” and Jan Markowski “Krzysztof”. They created the “Marsz Mokotowa”.
The Pamięci żołnierzy AK Powstańców Mokotowa is more than a monument. It is a symbol of resistance. It recalls the sacrifices made during the Warsaw Uprising. It reminds us of the cost of freedom. It honors the bravery of the “Baszta” regiment. It ensures that their memory lives on.
