“A chilling wind whispers secrets from the past” This unassuming plaque before us tells a story of courage and sacrifice. It commemorates the Strnadovi family a testament to resilience during dark times.
The Pamětní deska manželům Strnadovým plaque stands on Pivovarnická 15/1844 in Prague 8. It’s a poignant reminder of Marie and Bohumil Strnadovi. This brave couple actively supported the Anthropoid operation. They were members of the Sokol a Czech gymnastic organization with a strong tradition of patriotism.
Bohuslav Strnad a talented violinist was a leader in the Liben Sokol branch. He used his position to secretly aid the paratroopers. Marie his wife was equally involved in the resistance. They provided vital resources like money food and shelter. Their home became a safe haven for those fighting against Nazi oppression.
The couple’s clandestine activities were risky. They knew the dangers they faced. After the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich the Gestapo intensified its search for collaborators. The Strnadovi family was arrested on July 14 1942. Their four-year-old daughter witnessed their arrest. It must have been a terrifying experience for a young child.
Despite brutal interrogations Bohuslav remained silent. He protected his fellow resistants. His unwavering resolve saved many lives. A Gestapo officer later said he was a tough nut. They tried for days to get him to talk. He chose to remain a hero. He could have saved his family. He chose to uphold his principles.
Marie faced unimaginable suffering during imprisonment. Her hair turned gray. She was emaciated. A Sokol member who saw her later testified to her horrifying ordeal. She was a beautiful woman broken by the brutality of the regime.
On October 24 1942 Marie and Bohuslav were executed in Mauthausen concentration camp. They were among 262 people killed that day. The couple’s daughter Janička survived. She was cared for by Marie’s mother until the war ended.
The Pamětní deska manželům Strnadovým plaque was unveiled on October 22 2014. It’s a small yet powerful tribute. It ensures the Strnadovi’s legacy of courage will live on.
