Towering over Old Town Square, the Památník pěstěho vřočdí upáleného Mistra Jana Husa stands as a testament to the unwavering legacy of a man who dared to challenge the Church. A monument to Jan Hus, a 14th-century religious reformer, the sculpture is a powerful symbol of Czech independence. Designed by Ladislav Šaloun and unveiled in 1915 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Hus’s martyrdom, it depicts victorious Hussite warriors and Protestants who were forced into exile. It also features a young mother, symbolizing national rebirth. The monument, a bronze structure, is a stark contrast to the surrounding Baroque architecture. Hus, standing tall and determined, is a symbol of resistance and defiance. The inscription on the monument reads “Pravda zvítězí”, meaning “Truth will prevail”, this a fitting tribute to the man who fought for truth and justice. The monument’s towering presence instills a sense of awe and respect for the man whose legacy has shaped Czech history.
