“A Viking ship burial? Right here?” You ask incredulously, pointing to the small, rocky hill at the heart of Pålsundsparken. “Imagine, a mighty warrior, laid to rest with all his treasures,” I whisper, my voice hushed with awe. You look around at the modern city that surrounds us. “Sure, imagine. But is there any proof?”

Pålsundsparken, a long, slim park that follows the southern shores of Södermalm, holds more than just trees and flowers. It’s a place where history unfolds before your eyes. Just below the hill we’re standing on is the evidence. Centuries ago, before the park was built, this hill was a stone quarry. It was here that, in 1846, 24 convicts from a nearby prison worked tirelessly to break up the stones that would eventually pave the streets of Stockholm. No, no Viking ship burials, but an important piece of Stockholm’s history.

The park also contains the Pålsundsberget, a protected natural monument rich in geological and botanical treasures. Look around the hill and you’ll find the scars of the old quarry with its rough rock faces, and the lush vegetation that has since taken hold, with its wild assortment of plants.

Did you ever stop to think that this park was once called Heleneborgsparken? A name it held until 1933 when it was renamed Pålsundsparken. The park was just a simple, quiet park for many years, until in 1987, a summer café called Lasse i Parken opened its door. This cozy café is housed in a building that dates back to 1730, and it serves as a welcoming spot for locals and tourists alike.

So although the park may not have Viking ship burials, it is where the past meets the present. It is a place where you can enjoy a moment of peace, explore nature’s wonders, and be reminded of the city’s rich and diverse history.
