“Fancy a bit of exploring?” Palona Cave awaits. It is a hidden gem in the Royal National Park. Most people don’t realize this cool spot is super close to Lady Carrington Drive.
Palona Cave is one of the more interesting places in the park. If you like getting off the main trails this is a great spot. The walk to Palona Cave is easy. It makes for a good family outing.
Palona Cave is not your average cave. You won’t find classic stalactites and stalagmites like in limestone caves. The formations here have emerged from sandstone. Groundwater has seeped along the cliff. It carries small amounts of lime. The water drips into the cave. It leaves lime behind after evaporation. Over time the residual limestone forms stalagmites and stalactites.
The formations at Palona Cave don’t have the beauty of Jenolan Caves. They look like they need a good clean. Dust cobwebs and moss cover them.
Palona Cave is tall and looming. However it is more open than you might expect. It feels more like a large overhang than a cave. But don’t let that deter you. It’s still a fun place to explore. There is a little tunnel section that kids will enjoy.
Palona Cave is right next to Palona Waterfall. The waterfall is fed by Palona Brook. Palona Waterfall is one of the hidden waterfalls of the Royal National Park. Not many people know about it.
The waterfall is quite high and is a cascading waterfall. You can view it easily from the top section near Palona Cave.
Palona Cave has sadly been affected by graffiti. Some visitors have written their names on the walls. Please respect this natural space. Leave it as you found it. Let others enjoy its beauty.
The walk to Palona Cave is short and easy. You don’t need to pack a lot. Runners are fine for this journey. Hiking boots will keep you from worrying about mud.
Remember to bring water. There are no toilets or drinking water on the trail. Also consider sunscreen and insect repellent.
To get to Palona Cave, park at the south end of Lady Carrington Drive. From there walk about 1.8 km. Then turn onto Palona Track for another 800 metres. Keep an eye out for the “Limestone Cave” sign. It’s easy to miss because it faces the other way.
