Palais Universitaire

Beneath the gaze of Athena, goddess of wisdom, stands the Palais Universitaire. This grand neo-Renaissance palace whispers tales of empires, knowledge, and a city caught between two worlds. The Palais Universitaire wasn’t always French. Inaugurated in 1884 by Kaiser Wilhelm I, it symbolized Germany’s ambition to establish a strong intellectual foothold in newly annexed Alsace-Lorraine. The Palais Universitaire replaced the pre-existing French university, becoming the heart of the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Universität. Its location, at the end of a grand avenue leading to the Imperial Palace, wasn’t accidental. It showcased the intertwined power of knowledge and empire. The design, inspired by Italian Renaissance palaces like Verona’s Palazzo Pompei, exudes grandeur. Thirty-six statues adorn the facade, honoring figures from Copernicus to Calvin. The inscription “Litteris et Patriae” – “For Letters and Fatherland” – declared its purpose. Inside, the Aula, a glass-covered atrium, evokes the spirit of Italian Renaissance villas. Its painted vaults and ornate details housed not only students but also, in 1949, the first session of the Council of Europe. Imagine the hushed anticipation as delegates from twelve European nations gathered beneath the watchful gaze of a black granite Ramses II statue. This imposing figure, a gift from Egypt, adds an unexpected layer to the Palais Universitaire’s story. Today, the Palais Universitaire continues its legacy as a place of learning, housing the faculties of Arts, History, and Theology. The Presses Universitaires de Strasbourg, established in 1920, also reside within its walls. In the basement, the Gypsothèque, a museum of plaster casts, offers a glimpse into the world of classical sculpture, continuing the tradition of Adolf Michaelis, who began the collection in 1873. The Palais Universitaire stands as a testament to Strasbourg’s complex history.
