Across the Vltava River stands the Palacky Bridge a testament to Prague’s rich history. This isn’t just any bridge. The Palacky Bridge opened in 1876. It holds a special place among Prague’s many bridges. It’s one of the oldest still in use after the Charles Bridge. Think of it as the third major bridge built in Prague. The Franz Joseph Bridge opened just before it in 1868. That bridge met a tragic end damaged in 1941 and later dismantled. The Palacky Bridge endured.

Originally the Palacky Bridge boasted statues. Sculptor Josef Vaclav Myslbek created them. He depicted four pairs of legendary Czech couples. Ctirad and Sarka Libuse and Premysl Lumir and Pisen Zboj and Slavoj graced the bridge. Sadly these statues didn’t survive. World War II damaged them. They now reside in Vysehrad’s grounds.

Palacky Bridge served an important purpose. It connected the thriving industrial area of Smichov with the rest of Prague. The Ringhoffer factory a major employer in Smichov even contributed materials to its construction. It was more than just a means of transport. The Palacky Bridge held a special place in the lives of the people. Imagine Albert Einstein crossing it on his daily commute to the university. He lived in Smichov while studying in Prague from 1911 to 1912.

The Palacky Bridge was also innovative. It hosted Prague’s first horse-drawn tramway line in 1883. A marvel of engineering for its time it connected people and places in a way never seen before. It bridged more than just a river. It bridged eras and connected communities. The Palacky Bridge stands as a silent observer of Prague’s history. A symbol of resilience and progress its stones whisper stories of a city’s transformation. A bridge connecting past and present. A symbol of enduring strength standing proudly over the Vltava.
