They also explored the building’s construction and unique architecture. People rode the historic paternoster, one of Prague’s oldest. They viewed an exhibit showcasing YMCA’s work in Czechia from 1921 to the present. There were also concerts and even birthday cake. Children participated in crafting workshops. The palác YMCA has seen much throughout history. Originally built as accommodation, it boasted 170 rooms for 300 people. It featured rooftop playing fields, a gym with a running track, and even a swimming pool. During World War II, it became a hub for underground meetings. Later, it was occupied by the Nazis. After the war, the American YMCA helped fund its restoration. Sadly, the communist regime seized the property in 1951. It wasn’t returned to the YMCA until 1991, in a severely deteriorated state.
Today, the palác YMCA stands revitalized. It offers office rentals and other services, supporting the YMCA’s work with children and youth.
