Before you stands the Palac Smichovsky a silent witness to centuries of Prague’s history. Its very stones whisper tales of power intrigue and revolution.

The Palac Smichovsky isn’t just a building it’s a microcosm of Prague’s evolution. Originally built on the site of three or four medieval houses it rose to prominence in the 16th century. The Smichovsky family commissioned its construction in 1573.

The Smichovskys a powerful and influential family weren’t merely builders. They were players in the dramatic political landscape of the time. Their palace became a hub for anti-Habsburg sentiment. On May 22 1618 a secret meeting took place within these very walls. Albrecht Smichovsky convened a clandestine gathering of the Bohemian nobility. Their plot The Second Defenestration of Prague was a pivotal moment that sparked the Thirty Years’ War.

The palace witnessed further changes over the centuries. The Smichovskys lost their property after the Battle of White Mountain. Ownership passed through various hands including the Valdstejny the Pernstjny and even the Carmelites. In 1763 a significant renovation transformed the Renaissance structure. Jan Pavel of Montag’s project brought a Baroque makeover. An additional storey was added and the facade enhanced. The original arches were bricked up replaced by Baroque splendor.

During the 19th century the palace became a residence for numerous families who further adapted it to their needs. Its interiors once containing 28 rooms still boast original painted Renaissance ceilings. Then in 1895 the palace was acquired by the Bohemian Kingdom’s regional assembly. It became a key component in the parliament’s headquarters.

The final chapter of the Palac Smichovsky’s story unfolded in the 1990s. A complete reconstruction prepared it for its current function. Today a part of the complex of buildings making up the Parliament of the Czech Republic it stands as a testament to its rich past. It’s also a national cultural monument a treasure in the heart of Prague. The Palac Smichovsky’s past is truly remarkable. It echoes through the very air we breathe. It reminds us that even the stones have stories to tell.
