Could walls talk, this palace would sing arias. This is Palác Pachtů z Rájova. It is a rococo jewel nestled on Anenské náměstí. The Palác Pachtů z Rájova is more than just a pretty facade. It’s a stage where musical history played out.

Let’s journey back to the 18th century. Picture Count Jan Josef Pachta z Rájova. He was a music lover and patron. His palace became a hub for musical luminaries.

The Palác Pachtů z Rájova resonated with melodies. Count Pachta even had his own orchestra. Imagine the sounds filling these halls. Composers like Josef Mysliveček graced this very spot. But one name echoes loudest: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Mozart was a frequent guest here at Palác Pachtů z Rájova. During one visit, Count Pachta playfully “imprisoned” Mozart. He confined him to a room with ink and paper. The Count wanted those promised dances.

Legend says Mozart composed six German dances KV 509 to earn his release. Imagine Mozart scribbling away. The sounds of his quill scratching on paper filled the room. These dances bought his freedom. Mozart often stayed in his favorite room here.

Later, other composers sought inspiration here. Ludwig van Beethoven and Richard Wagner also stayed in Palác Pachtů z Rájova.

The Palác Pachtů z Rájova faced demolition in the early 20th century. The Klub Za starou Prahu stepped in to rescue it. The palace was saved.

Notice the architecture. The architect emphasized the courtyard. Look at the facade details and the columned portico. The sculptures are by Ignác Platzer. The exterior is plainer.

The Pachta family crests are above the entrance from Anenské náměstí. In the courtyard, find the small fountain with a lion mask. A grand staircase leads up from the passage under the balcony.

The original garden stretched to the Vltava River. But the New Pachtovský Palace was built in 1836. Jan Maxmilián Hager designed it. The Slovanská kavárna was in the new palace. Czech patriots gathered there.

Today, the Palác Pachtů z Rájova and the New Pachtovský Palace function as a hotel. The palace stands as a testament to Prague’s rich musical heritage. It reminds us of the power of art and preservation. It is a place where music and history intertwine. The Palác Pachtů z Rájova stands as a cultural monument.
