Palác Koruna stands proudly at Wenceslas Square number one. This prime location places it at the very heart of Prague. Imagine this building in 1914. It was a marvel of modern Czech architecture. Today palác Koruna blends historical charm with modern functionality.
Antonín Pfeifer and Matěj Blecha designed palác Koruna. Their architectural vision resulted in a late Art Nouveau masterpiece. The building boasts a reinforced concrete skeleton. This skeleton extends two stories underground and four stories above ground.
Notice the fractured through passage with a courtyard. Above is a distinctive corner tower. Atlantes support its crown. The courtyard features a cupola adorned with stained glass. Palác Koruna is truly impressive.
This building replaced the Dům U Spinků. In the late 19th century, this earlier building hosted Café Wien. Prominent Czech patriots gathered here including František Palacký.
Palác Koruna was innovative for its time. It was among the first buildings with a reinforced concrete structure. The First Czech General Joint Stock Insurance Company financed its construction. This company later changed its name to “Koruna”.
Palác Koruna has undergone changes over the years. In the early 1990s, the ground floor and basement were adapted for commercial use. This included a multi-story Bontonland store. Interestingly the space once housed an underground cinema and swimming pool.
Let’s talk about the Automat Koruna. In 1931, the first “Koruna-Automat” opened here. Citizens could insert a coin and enjoy lemonade. They could also savor open sandwiches. Pork and strawberry cocktails were popular. Sadly, the Automat Koruna was nationalized in 1948. Part of it made way for the metro entrance before closing in 1992.
