High above us in the Remutaka Range, the Pakuratahi River begins its journey. This river flows for 24 kilometers. It eventually joins the Te Awa Kairangi, also known as the Hutt River. The Pakuratahi River’s story is one of history and recreation.

The Pakuratahi River once served as part of a Māori trail. This trail connected Wellington Harbour with the Wairarapa region over the Remutaka Range. Imagine Māori travelers using this river as a guide. They navigated through the rugged landscape.

The official name of the river was gazetted in December 2019. It became the Pākuratahi River. This change reflects the correct Māori spelling.

Today, the Pakuratahi River is a popular spot for recreation. It is located in Kaitoke Regional Park. This park is in the upper reaches of the Hutt catchment. You can access the river from Eastern Hutt Road or the Hutt River Trail. It is a favorite picnic spot.

The Greater Wellington Regional Council monitors the water quality here. They check it weekly during the summer months. This monitoring is part of the Recreational Water Quality Programme. It informs the public about swimming safety. Generally, it is safe to swim in dry weather. However, heavy rain can affect the water quality. It is best to avoid swimming for at least two days after heavy rain.

The Pakuratahi River Walk offers an easy path. It links the Kaitoke Regional Park campground with Pākuratahi Forks. You will cross the river over a pedestrian bridge. The trail winds through mixed podocarp and broadleaf forest.

At Pākuratahi Forks, you will find the Rivendell film location. This is from “The Lord of the Rings.” A replica Elvish Archway stands here. For a longer walk, continue onto Swingbridge Track. The river’s gentle waters offer a place to cool off.

Tunnel Gully Recreation Area is near the Pakuratahi Forest. It is a popular spot for mountain biking and walking. The trails provide access to the Remutaka Cycle Trail. They also connect to Kaitoke Hill.

The area is named “Tunnel Gully” for its link to the Remutaka railway line. The Mangaroa Tunnel was built nearby. It was constructed between 1875 and 1877. The Remutaka Tunnel replaced it in 1955.

The Pakuratahi River, with its blend of history and recreational opportunities, embodies the spirit of the Wellington region. It invites us to appreciate both its past and present.
