Can you imagine a time when pirates roamed the South China Sea, threatening coastal villages? Pak Mong, nestled on the northern shore of Lantau Island, faced such dangers during the Ming dynasty. Established by Hakka settlers in the 16th and 17th centuries, Pak Mong thrived on trade routes connecting Canton to Cheung Chau. Ferries bustling between Castle Peak, Pak Mong, Mui Wo, and Cheung Chau kept the village connected and prosperous. This vital link to the outside world, the kai-to ferry service, continued until as recently as 1986. But Pak Mong’s location also made it vulnerable. To protect themselves from pirates and bandits, the villagers constructed fortifications. An imposing entrance gate, sections of a sturdy wall, and a watchtower, built in the 1940s, stood as sentinels against potential attacks. These structures still stand today. The watchtower is now recognized as a Grade II Historic Building, and the entrance gate holds a Grade III Historic Building listing. Pak Mong has seen its share of change. Once a bustling village with a thriving school, built in 1955, it now stands quieter. At its peak in 1975, the school educated around 30 children. However, as agriculture declined and families moved away seeking new opportunities, the school closed its doors in 1985. Nature has reclaimed some areas. A natural stream still flows along Pak Mong’s western border, and a lush fung shui wood stands guard behind the village, home to 96 plant species, including the fragrant Incense Tree. Pak Mong is more than just a quiet village. It serves as a starting point for the Hong Kong Olympic Trail, a 5.6 km route connecting to Mui Wo. This “Olympic Route” was opened in 2008 to celebrate Hong Kong’s hosting of the equestrian events. Pak Mong also connects to the Islands Nature Heritage Trail, offering hikers stunning views of Lantau’s natural beauty. While only accessible by Cheung Tung Road from the north, with no road leading south, Pak Mong offers a glimpse into Hong Kong’s rich history, where the echoes of traders, children’s laughter, and the vigilance against pirates still linger.
