Thirst quenched by history. That’s what this fountain offers. This is the Paddy the Wanderer Plaque and Drinking Fountain. Right here on the wall of Shed 7. It’s a tribute to a remarkable dog. A stray Airedale Terrier or Irish Terrier. He was a Wellington waterfront legend. His name was Paddy.
Paddy wasn’t just any dog. He was a wanderer. A true adventurer. He charmed his way into the hearts of Wellingtonians during the Great Depression. He befriended waterfront workers seamen and taxi drivers. They even took turns paying his annual dog license. Paddy was a stowaway too. He travelled on coastal steamers even to Australia. He rode in taxis all over the city and even up the country. He even took a short flight in a Gipsy Moth biplane. Only a submarine and an aeroplane remained uncharted territories for this intrepid canine.
Paddy’s story is one of resilience and companionship. A symbol of hope during tough times. He was a beloved figure a true mascot. His adventures were legendary. He became a freeman of the City of Wellington. The Wellington Harbour Board even made him their Honorary Assistant Night-watchman. He was apparently responsible for pirates smugglers and rodents. Quite the resume for a dog.
The fountain itself is a work of art. It’s made of granite. This granite is special. It came from Waterloo Bridge in London. A symbolic gift designed to strengthen historic links within the British Commonwealth. A piece of London in Wellington.
Sadly Paddy died on July 17 1939. His funeral was quite the event. A fleet of black taxis formed a cortege. A touching tribute to a good comrade. Even the local radio station broadcast a tribute.
This plaque and fountain serve as a testament to Paddy’s life. A reminder of a dog’s loyalty and adventures. His legend lives on. The museum even renews Paddy’s registration every year.
