Ahoy there mates Did you know the Paddlewheeler Surprise was Australia’s first steamer? Right here on this very spot where we stand a piece of Australian maritime history was made.

The Surprise a small paddle steamer was launched in Sydney in 1831. She was built by Henry Gilbert possibly on the Parramatta River. This little boat was a big deal. She marked the dawn of steam-powered vessels in Australia.

Imagine the scene The Surprise chugging along the Parramatta River. Her first voyage was on June 1st 1831. Captain Devlin was at the helm. She wasn’t fast only reaching 3 knots initially. The crew soon improved her speed to 5 knots. This was amazing for that time. Passengers paid two shillings and sixpence for first class or two shillings for second class. Weekends were for excursions up the river.

The Surprise wasn’t just a ferry. She was a symbol of progress. She offered a faster alternative to the traditional watermen’s boats. Sadly she wasn’t a financial success. After only six months the Smith Brothers sold her to Tasmanian interests. Her final fate remains a mystery. A true enigma of the Parramatta.

But the legacy of the Paddlewheeler Surprise lives on. She paved the way for future steam-powered vessels in Australia. Her short but impactful story is a reminder of innovation and ambition. So next time you’re on the Parramatta remember the Surprise and her pioneering spirit.
