“What whispers through the city on the wind?” That’s the question Konstantin Dimopoulos posed when he created Pacific Grass.

Hello everyone. Today, we’re standing before Pacific Grass. It’s a sculpture that truly captures Wellington’s spirit.

Konstantin Dimopoulos, a Wellingtonian raised in this very city, designed Pacific Grass to respond to Wellington’s famous wind. Dimopoulos is an Egyptian-born Greek.

The sculpture moves with the wind. It represents the bulrushes of the Wairarapa area. Dimopoulos often visited this area as a young man.

Dimopoulos’ striking art has been exhibited all over the world. He has public sculptures in the United States and Australia. He creates art installations that respond to social issues.

One of his notable works is The Blue Trees. He colors trees with a safe blue pigment to raise awareness of deforestation. He is also working on a project called Purple Rain, which comments on homelessness.

Another of Dimopoulos’ sculptures is Windgrass. It is located in Featherston’s Clifford Square. It is 8.5 meters tall and made of brown and yellow rods.

The rods are made of a carbon fibre composite material. They are between six and eight metres high. They wave in the wind. They bang together making a clacking sound.

Local residents may measure the weather by the intensity of the movement. Or by the rare quietness with no wind.

Featherston’s Wind-grass covers only a couple of square metres. It maintains the proportions of a tall standing figure. It could be a guardian of the town. People can touch the material and understand its strength.

Public art contributes to the wellbeing of the community. It provides stimulation and enjoyment to citizens and visitors. It displays the diversity of cultural production.

Wellington City has a policy outlining how public art benefits the community. The Wellington Council has raised millions of dollars for public art projects. This investment has resulted in Wellington being acknowledged as the cultural capital.

Pacific Grass embodies Wellington’s artistic vision. It’s a testament to how art can reflect and enhance our environment. It’s more than just a sculpture. It is a symbol of Wellington’s unique character. As you explore Wellington, remember Pacific Grass. Remember how it moves with the wind. Think about the message it conveys. Let it inspire you to see the beauty in our surroundings. Let it remind you of the power of art.
