Born in England in 1866 Owen Staples arrived in Toronto as a child. He became a renowned artist a cartoonist and a long-time illustrator for the Evening Telegram. His art depicts Toronto’s history. His work resides in major public and private collections.

Staples wasn’t just an artist. He was a musician too. He was a member of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir for 55 years. This shows his dedication to Toronto’s vibrant arts scene. He embraced the Arts and Crafts Movement evident in his home’s design.

The Owen Staples House and Studio was designed by Staples himself along with his artist friend C.W. Jefferys. Jefferys’ father constructed it using Don Valley bricks. These were bricks rejected from other projects. The home features a double-height great room. It served as both a studio and a living space. Light streamed through the front window. A cozy inglenook fireplace warmed the room. This room became a popular gathering place. People from all walks of life visited the Staples family.

Owen Staples died in 1949. His legacy however lives on. This plaque reminds us of his contributions to Toronto’s cultural life. His open house attracted a cross-section of Toronto society. Regular visitors included members of the Group of Seven and others from the Arts and Letters Club. This plaque is more than just a marker.
