Amidst the Vienna Woods, a special place beckons. The Aussichtspunkt Am Himmel has drawn visitors for centuries. Am Himmel translates to “at the sky”. This name perfectly captures the elevated experience this viewpoint offers. The area has a rich history. Prunkvolle gardens, ponds, and exotic plants began attracting crowds as early as 1784. A trip to Am Himmel was a day’s journey. Visitors strolled past fields and gardens. A footpath led them through Sievering and into a cool, shaded avenue. This path, dotted with benches and smaller viewpoints, eventually led to a castle. Fragrant flowerbeds surrounded the castle. The gardens, designed by the former Schönbrunn gardener Wenzel Buseck, reflected the romantic era. North of the castle lay the largest of several ponds, perfect for a leisurely boat ride. Carp and goldfish ponds added to the tranquil scene. A small amusement area later emerged in a clearing above the castle. It featured bowling alleys, shooting galleries, slides, swings, tables, and benches. This area provided entertainment and drew large crowds. In 1834, Am Himmel began charging admission. A former farmhouse, later used as a dairy, was transformed into the “Schweizerhütte” restaurant. This complex, eventually known as “Franz Hamelas Meierei und Restauration Am Himmel”, thrived until after World War I. Its large outdoor seating area provided refreshment for hikers and day-trippers. The Sisi Chapel, built between 1854 and 1856, also became a popular destination. It offered a quiet place for reflection, prayer, and religious services. In 1997, the Kuratorium Wald acquired much of Am Himmel. They established the Lebensbaumkreis (Life Tree Circle), the Oktogon Cafe Restaurant, a vineyard, a nature playground, and other environmentally friendly features. These additions revitalized the area, making it a haven for nature lovers. The Aussichtspunkt Am Himmel is once again a place where visitors can relax and soak in the atmosphere. Events like the spring bonfire festival, the pumpkin festival, and musical performances in the Lebensbaumkreis are very popular. Select concerts are also held in the meadows, providing a picturesque setting for both performers and audiences. Today, the Aussichtspunkt Am Himmel continues to charm visitors. The panoramic views, the historical echoes, and the natural beauty all combine to create a truly memorable experience.
