Our Lady of Victories Horsley Park wasn’t always here. In the 1950s locals journeyed to nearby towns for Mass. Carpools were common. Friends and neighbors shared rides. Masses were sometimes held in the tiny Community Hall. This highlights the strong community spirit even before the church existed. A priest started visiting weekly in 1952. Later Maltese migrants enjoyed monthly masses in their native tongue.
The parish was officially established in 1960. Fr Ernest G Paine became the first parish priest. Baptisms were initially at homes. The community rallied together. They raised funds through door-to-door appeals. They raffled handmade doilies and market garden produce. Fetes boosted the fundraising. A Planned Giving Envelope system was also introduced.
Tony and Paula Cini donated land. This spurred further fundraising. Fr Paine’s mother gave a brass crucifix for the altar. Cardinal Gilroy blessed the first church in 1961. The original church was later replaced by a larger one. This second church opened in 1993. The new church stands on a hill behind the original building. Cardinal Clancy dedicated this bigger church.
