Whispers of “a grand ideal” echoed through the community, laying the foundation for Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. This church, a beacon of faith in Erskineville, stands as a testament to a priest’s vision and a community’s love. Our Lady of Perpetual Succour wasn’t the first church on this site. Originally, a small wooden Protestant church stood at 134 George Street. It later became St Mary of the Suburbs, a station church of Broadway parish. In 1889, it transitioned to the independent parish of Macdonaldtown. The area, primarily inhabited by working-class families, treasured their church. In 1909, Father Reginald Bridge, the parish priest, dreamt of a new, grander church for his beloved community. He envisioned a magnificent edifice dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, a testament to his devotion. Tragically, Father Bridge passed away before his dream materialized. He left a substantial bequest, and the parishioners, determined to honor his memory, began construction. The old church was sold, making way for the railway expansion. In 1911, the foundation stone of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour was laid. The building was designed in the Federation Gothic style by J.T. McCarthy. Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, completed in 1912, became the first church in Australia dedicated to Mary under this title. The church was not only a tribute to Father Bridge but also the first church opened by the new Archbishop of Sydney following Cardinal Moran’s death. The new Archbishop, in his dedication address, spoke of the church as a “grand ideal,” symbolizing genuine Christianity. He emphasized the importance of unity and love for the Church, reflecting the very spirit that built Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. The church’s history continues with colorful characters like Dr. Twomey, a priest known for his compassion and occasional bursts of temper. He once chased a troublemaker across Erskineville Oval and was known to give away his own shoes to those in need. Over the years, different orders, including the White Fathers and the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, have shepherded the parish, keeping the spirit of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour alive. The legacy of Father Bridge, the dedication of the parishioners, and the enduring faith of the community are woven into the very fabric of this beautiful church.
