On January 12 1968 a dream took root. Monsignor Peter Amin Ziade returned from Lebanon. He envisioned a magnificent church. It would stand tall a beacon of faith for the growing Maronite community in Sydney. Our Lady of Lebanon was to be more than just a place of worship. It was to be a community hub a spiritual home.

The chosen location in Harris Park offered breathtaking views. Construction began in 1970. The excitement was palpable. Palm Sunday 1970 saw over 10000 Maronites gather. They welcomed Cardinal Gilroy. They laid the foundation stone together a pivotal moment in Our Lady of Lebanon’s history.

The hall and school opened in December 1972. For six years the hall served as the church itself. This temporary arrangement only added to the anticipation. Finally on August 6 1978 Archbishop Abdo Khalifé blessed the completed church.

An impressive 7-meter-tall statue was initially raised in 1976. Local objections led to its replacement in 1980. Today the 5-meter bronze statue stands proudly atop the church. It continues to be a symbol of faith and devotion.

Our Lady of Lebanon’s influence extended beyond its walls. In 2012 a Community Youth and Pastoral Centre opened. It serves all generations. The church was elevated to co-cathedral status in 2014. This signified its importance within the Maronite community.

Today Our Lady of Lebanon stands as the largest Maronite Catholic parish in Australia. Over 40 years the Maronite population has tripled. The church remains a testament to unwavering faith and community spirit. Its enduring legacy continues to inspire and unite people across generations. It is a place where history and devotion intertwine creating a unique and powerful spiritual experience. Our Lady of Lebanon a symbol of hope and resilience in the heart of Sydney.
