“Can you feel it?” I ask, turning to face you all with a twinkle in my eye. “The air here vibrates with a special energy.” We stand before the Our Lady of Holy Rosary Church in Mandalay, its facade bathed in the warm hues of the late afternoon sun. This isn’t just any church. The Our Lady of Holy Rosary Church stands as a beacon of faith, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Catholic community in Myanmar. Its history is deeply entwined with the very soul of Mandalay. Founded in 1890, this sanctuary has witnessed the ebb and flow of life, weathering storms both literal and metaphorical. The church we see today is not the original structure. During World War II, fear gripped the hearts of the faithful. They took the extraordinary step of burying the statue of Our Lady, hoping to protect it from the ravages of war. After the war, the villagers returned, eager to unearth their beloved Madonna. But the statue was gone. A woman named Daw Phan came forward, claiming to have dreamt of the statue’s location. Following her guidance, the villagers dug and were met with an astonishing sight. The statue, buried horizontally, was standing upright within a cave-like enclosure, untouched by soil. This miraculous event cemented the Our Lady of Holy Rosary Church as a place of profound spiritual significance. Today, the church continues to serve as a beacon of hope, a place where the faithful gather not only for Mass but also for retreats, workshops, and moments of quiet reflection. Even if you aren’t religious, the palpable peace within its walls invites contemplation and perhaps, even a whispered prayer.
