In 1940, a vision took shape amidst the vibrant energy of Sea Point. This vision was Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church. It stands proudly at the corner of St. Andrew’s and Beach Roads. This church replaced the smaller St. Francis of Assisi Mission Church, which could no longer accommodate the burgeoning Catholic community. Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church became a beacon of faith. It welcomed worshippers from Sea Point and beyond. The church’s name, chosen by Dr. John Sheehan, pays homage to the iconic Cape of Good Hope. The foundation stone was laid on December 8, 1940, by Bishop Hennemann. Interestingly, the sanctuary from the old St. Francis Church was incorporated into the new structure, creating a tangible link to the past. The remaining structure of St. Francis became the first parish hall for Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church. The church’s construction was a testament to the skill of Joseph Rubbi, an Italian builder who had also contributed to other significant buildings in Cape Town. The wooden cross and the figure of Jesus within Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church are the work of William George Bevington, a deaf artist known for his intricate carvings. The Stations of the Cross, carved by C.G. Laros, were added later, replacing the original paintings. Over the years, Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church has witnessed a rich history of pastoral leadership, community involvement, and expansion. The parish hall was expanded and a new Parish Centre was added. This created a space for various activities and gatherings. Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church continues to be a place of spiritual upliftment. It has undergone recent restorations. It continues to serve as a symbol of hope and faith in the heart of Sea Point.
