Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church first opened its doors in 1924. It was blessed that same year. A new church building was constructed in 1960. It was later dedicated in 1985. Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cape Town. This archdiocese has a long history. It began as the Apostolic Vicariate of Cape of Good Hope in 1818. Pope Pius VII established it. Over time the archdiocese expanded and changed. It adapted to the needs of the growing Catholic community.

Fr Jonathan Daniels SDB is the Parish Priest. Fr Robert Gore SDB is the Assistant Priest. Several resident priests also serve the community. They are Frs Christopher Sharpe, Bart Walsh, Eddie O’Neill and John Thompson. Dcn Bradley Davids is the Parish Deacon.

The Parish Office is open Monday to Friday. Hours are 08.30 to 14.30. Stephanie is the secretary.

Masses are held on Saturdays at 18.00 for Sunday Mass. Sunday Masses are at 07.30, 09.15 and 18.00. Weekday Masses are held Tuesday to Friday at 09.00. Confessions are heard on Saturdays. They are in the Savio Hall from 17.00 to 18.00.

Devotions include Novena and Mass on Wednesdays at 09.00. First Friday Mass is at 19.00. This is followed by prayers in the garden of remembrance. The Rosary is recited at 09.30 on weekdays after Mass.

Many ministries and societies thrive here. These include Altar Servers and the Care group. There is also Fundraising and Men for Change. A Ladies’ Group and the Music Ministry exist. The Legion of Mary and the Liturgy team are active. Parents with a Passion also participate. The Parish Finance committee is important. Pre Baptism preparation is offered. Proclaimers of the Word serve the church. The PPC ensures smooth operation. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist. Sacristans maintain the sacred space. Salesian co-operators contribute. SVP and the Seniors Club provide outreach. The Youth Ministry engages young people. Florists beautify the church.

Catechetics are held on Sundays. Times are 09.15-10.15. Ms Vanessa Joshua is the coordinator. She can be reached at 073 240 8511 or vanessa.joshua@capetown.gov.za. The Salesians of Don Bosco are affiliated with the church. Chaplaincies are provided at Rosedon House and Harmony House.
