Before us stands the Otto-Hahn-Schulzentrum, a modern testament to education in Bergisch Gladbach. This sprawling complex, built in 1973, is the home to both a gymnasium and a Realschule, serving over 1,700 students. But the story of the Otto-Hahn-Schulzentrum goes back much further, to 1965, when the first students of the “Städtisches mathematisch-naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium Bensberg” found themselves learning in makeshift classrooms. The school, a new alternative to the more traditional schools in the area, found its home in a series of temporary buildings. One of these buildings was a collection of pavilions on the Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium grounds, and another was the former Moitzfelder Volksschule.

The construction of the school was a complex undertaking, with many different stages, and it was only in 1973, following the draining of the Saaler Mächle, that the school was finally able to move into its permanent location at the Saaler Mächle. In the same year, the school was renamed the “Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium,” a name that reflected its strong focus on natural sciences. The decision to name the school after Otto Hahn, the discoverer of nuclear fission, was influenced by the local Interatom company, which took a strong interest in sponsoring the school.

This decision was not without its symbolism. The Interatom company was a German company that specialized in building nuclear reactors. In 1968, the company had launched a nuclear-powered cargo ship named the “Otto Hahn.” It hoped that the ship would become a symbol of a bright future for the peaceful use of nuclear energy in Germany. And what better way to symbolize this future than to name a school after the man who discovered the science that made it all possible? The school became a symbol of the scientific and technological ambitions of Germany.

Though the school underwent a renovation in 2021, it retains its commitment to the sciences, with classrooms fully equipped with modern technology and strong programs in several fields. The school also features a bustling music program, with multiple ensembles, an orchestra, and a big band. With its focus on science and music, the Otto-Hahn-Schulzentrum is a flourishing example of modern education in Germany.
