Kotaka envisioned more than just domestic skills. She believed in scientific training for homemaking. Her school grew into Otsuma Girls’ High School in 1935. Later, the Otsuma Women’s Vocational School opened in 1942. Finally, in 1949, Otsuma Women’s University was founded.
For years, Otsuma was synonymous with the ideal of “good wives and wise mothers”. The university specialized in home economics. An adjacent junior college was established in 1950. It seemed Otsuma was set on a traditional course.
But times changed. The job market evolved rapidly. Otsuma Women’s University faced new challenges. The demand shifted from junior college graduates to those with four-year degrees. Otsuma adapted.
In 1967, a Faculty of Language and Literature was established. A second campus opened in Sayamadai. Two independent girls’ schools became affiliated. Otsuma Nakano and Otsuma Ranzan joined the Otsuma family. A third campus opened in Tama in 1990.
The university embraced new fields of study. Social Information Studies and Comparative Cultures became part of the curriculum. Otsuma Junior College was scaled back to focus on the four-year programs. Otsuma broadened its horizons.
Otsuma Women’s University joined the United Nations Academic Impact initiative in 2021. It committed to global citizenship and intercultural understanding. It strives to empower women.
The university’s motto is “Never disgrace yourself”. It encourages dignity and respect. It guides students to overcome obstacles. Otsuma wants its students to lead and contribute to society.
Though once known for producing “good wives and wise mothers”, Otsuma’s focus has evolved. The university encourages women to become leaders in various fields. It promotes peace and social development. It nurtures their capabilities.
