The Otago School of Medicine’s Wellington campus has a fascinating history. From the 1920s, Otago students could train in Wellington hospitals. Wellington Hospital became a teaching hospital in 1926. By 1937, it was a branch faculty. A full clinical school was established in 1977. This was the forerunner to the University of Otago, Wellington. Fifty-two fourth-year students were enrolled that first year.

However, in 2021, the campus building faced an unexpected challenge. Earthquake concerns forced its closure. Staff had to adapt, working from home or other locations.

Despite this setback, the Otago School of Medicine continues its important work. It houses nine academic departments. These departments include medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology and women’s health. Also included are paediatrics, pathology and molecular medicine, and primary health care. Rounding out the list are psychological medicine, public health, radiation therapy, and surgery and anaesthesia.

The Wellington Medical and Health Sciences Library supports the school. It provides services to staff and students. It also serves staff at Te Whatu Ora Capital Coast and Hutt Valley.
