Gazing at the Oswaldkirche, can you sense the echoes of centuries whispering through its stones? This unassuming church, nestled in Stuttgart-Weilimdorf, is more than just a place of worship. It’s a time capsule, holding within its walls the stories of a community and the artistry of generations. The Oswaldkirche, Stuttgart’s oldest building in Weilimdorf, first appeared in records in 1243. But its story begins much earlier. Imagine a simpler structure, possibly made of wood, gracing this very spot as early as the 8th or 9th century. The Oswaldkirche we see today took shape around 1472, when the nave was added to the existing tower. Look closely above the north entrance. You’ll find the date, inscribed in Roman numerals. Inside the Oswaldkirche, art and history intertwine. A late Gothic crucifix hangs above the altar, a testament to an unknown master’s skill. Nearby, a sandstone relief, “Beweinung Christi,” created around 1500, showcases the talent of Hans Seyffer or one of his students. Don’t miss the vibrant stained-glass windows by Wolf-Dieter Kohler, depicting scenes from Jesus’ life. These windows, though destroyed during the war, were painstakingly recreated by Kohler himself, preserving their beauty for future generations. High above, in the keystone of the choir’s ribbed vault, you’ll find the image of Saint Oswald, the church’s namesake. This Northumbrian king, who died in 642, became a revered figure, especially among the Welfs of Southern Germany. The Welfs likely dedicated the churches in Weilimdorf and neighboring Hirschlanden to Saint Oswald to solidify their influence against the Staufer dynasty. The Oswaldkirche has witnessed not only the rise and fall of dynasties but also the changing tides of faith. Once under the patronage of the Sindelfingen monastery, it became Protestant after the Reformation. Today, it stands as the mother church of all Protestant churches in the district. As you leave the Oswaldkirche, remember the echoes of its past. From the whispers of early worshippers to the melodies of its historic organ, the stories of this church are woven into the fabric of Stuttgart’s history.
