How many parks can you name that were once home to a world-famous factory? Östra Primusparken might not be as glamorous as its namesake product, the Primus stove, but it has a fascinating story to tell. This tranquil green space on the island of Lilla Essingen was once a hive of industrial activity. It was the former site of the Primus factory, which produced the iconic Primus stoves from 1907 until 1956. These stoves, known for their durability and reliability, were used by explorers, adventurers, and households worldwide. Even the legendary Roald Amundsen, the first to reach the South Pole, relied on a Primus stove during his expeditions. At its peak in the 1920s, the factory churned out an astounding 800,000 stoves annually. The factory’s presence transformed Lilla Essingen from a peaceful getaway for Stockholmers into a bustling industrial hub. Sadly, the factory was demolished in the late 1950s to make way for the Essingeleden highway. A new chapter began for Östra Primusparken, with its transformation into a peaceful retreat for locals and visitors alike. Stroll through the park today, and you can almost hear the echoes of the factory floor and imagine the ingenuity that once thrived here.
