“Brewing brilliance since 1887.” That’s the motto that could easily hang above the entrance to the Österreichisches Getränkeinstitut. This institute has dedicated itself to the education of brewers and maltsters. It stands as Austria’s only vocational school of its kind.

Here at the Österreichisches Getränkeinstitut, tradition flows like a perfectly poured pilsner. For over a century, this institute has been shaping the future of Austrian brewing and beverage technology. Imagine apprentices carefully learning the age-old secrets of brewing. They master the delicate balance of hops, malt, and water.

The Österreichisches Getränkeinstitut started in 1887. Today, about 20 to 30 apprentices graduate each year as certified Brau- und GetränketechnikerIn, a title they’ve held since 2005. The private school operates as a non-profit. It finances its operations through school fees.

Let’s talk about the people who make this place tick. For almost two decades, Dr. Hans-Joachim Schmidt steered the Österreichisches Getränkeinstitut. He retired after serving twelve years as its director. His successor, Dipl.-Braumeister Bernd Kistler, had already been teaching at the institute for nearly six years.

Kistler’s journey is quite interesting. He trained as a brewer and maltster at the Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg. He then spent three years at Augustiner Bräu München. After earning his Diplom-Braumeister from TU Berlin, he worked on brewery projects worldwide. His work spanned from Angola to China and even Ukraine. He eventually returned to Austria and became a teacher at the Österreichisches Getränkeinstitut.

Now, consider the curriculum. The Österreichisches Getränkeinstitut offers programs for both Brau- und Getränketechnik and Destillateur/Destillateurin. Both last three years. Here, students don’t just learn from textbooks. They gain hands-on experience. They learn the intricacies of brewing science and the art of distillation.

The Österreichisches Getränkeinstitut has moved locations twice under Schmidt’s direction. Its dedication to training remains constant. This is more than a school. It is a guardian of Austria’s rich brewing heritage. The Österreichisches Getränkeinstitut ensures that the traditions continue. It adapts to modern techniques. This is where future brewmasters hone their craft.
