A colossal water tower dominates the skyline. It’s Orminge’s landmark. This 32-meter-tall concrete cylinder clad in wood and aluminum holds 12300 cubic meters of water. It stands proudly a testament to Orminge’s growth.
Orminge is a suburb in Nacka municipality about 16 kilometers outside central Stockholm. It’s more than just a collection of houses. Orminge boasts a fascinating history. It’s built on a large island called Hargsön during medieval times. The name Orminge originally referred to a different area though. This area is still called Ormingelandet on modern maps. Interestingly Hargsön was already called Orminga on a 17th-century map.
Vestra Orminge the largest residential area in Orminge holds 2600 apartments. Built between 1964 and 1971 it reflects the architectural style of that era. Ohlsson & Skarne a renowned construction firm was involved. Joran Curmans designed the buildings with HSB Stockholm overseeing the project. The area shows a typical zoning pattern. There is an inner green zone. This is surrounded by housing and an outer traffic zone with roads parking and a central hub. The low-rise buildings blend seamlessly with the landscape. The municipality aimed to preserve the area’s original character.
Ostra Orminge with its terraced houses built between 1978 and 1981 presents a different character. These houses offer both ownership and rental options. They rise and fall with the hilly terrain.
Orminge has a central hub Orminge Centrum. Plans are afoot to expand this area significantly. The goal is to make Orminge Centrum a safe accessible and vibrant community hub. This will involve new housing and commercial spaces along with improvements to public transport and infrastructure.
Famous residents have called Orminge home. Ulf Lundell Markoolio and Sanna Bråding are among them. Their presence adds to Orminge’s unique charm. Orminge is a place where history architecture and community blend together. It’s more than a suburb it’s a story waiting to be discovered.
