What kind of beach needs a sand transplant? Oriental Bay, believe it or not. This beach, nestled between a hillside dotted with historic homes and the sparkling waters of Wellington Harbour, has quite a story to tell. You see, Oriental Bay wasn’t always the sandy paradise it is today. In fact, for much of its life, it was quite literally rocky. Originally known as Duppa Bay, this little curve of coastline was once a rather dreary spot. It was used as a quarantine zone for new arrivals and even as a dumping ground for ships’ ballast. The name changed in 1843, taking inspiration from a ship called the ‘Oriental’. As Wellington grew, so did Oriental Bay’s popularity. The 20th century saw the addition of iconic landmarks like the Freyberg Pool and those gorgeous Art Deco apartments you see clinging to the hillside. But the beach itself remained stubbornly rocky. The sand just wouldn’t stay put.
That’s where the transplant comes in. In 2004, Oriental Bay received a rather dramatic makeover. A whopping 22,000 tonnes of sand was shipped all the way from Golden Bay to replenish its shores. It’s like giving the beach a whole new lease on life, wouldn’t you say? Today, Oriental Bay is a beloved spot for Wellingtonians and visitors alike. The sandy beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll along the promenade.
