Envision a place shaped by history. Imagine a community evolving from rural roots to a vibrant Stockholm suburb. That place is Örby. We will explore its story together right now.

Örby began as a self-governing village in 1904. It was part of Brännkyrka Rural District. This independence was relatively short-lived. In 1913, Örby was amalgamated into Stockholm City. The rural district dissolved. Today, Örby is part of the Enskede-Årsta-Vantör borough.

The name Örby comes from Örby Manor. The neighboring residential area of Örby slott shares this origin. These names connect the modern suburb to its historical roots. Örby spans 159 hectares. It is home to over 4,720 residents.

Look around. Can you spot Leipzighuset? This multi-dwelling apartment building stands out. Find it at the corner of Turingevägen and Gamla Huddingevägen. Built in the early 1900s, its architecture is unique in Örby. It draws inspiration from German metropolitan designs of that era.

Have you noticed Örbyskolan? This school was built in 1915. Georg A. Nilsson designed it. Its design resembles schools in Gamla Enskede and Långbro. Some even mistake it for a church due to its size and shape.

Between 1930 and 1951, trams served Örby. Line 19, then called Örbybanan, connected the area. Now, buses link Örby to the Stockholm Metro. You can access the metro at Bandhagen, Svedmyra, and Högdalen. The commuter rail station at Älvsjö is also easily accessible.

Örby IS, the local sports club, was founded in 1912. It remains active today. The club offers association football, floorball, and ice hockey. It fosters community spirit.

From its origins as a rural village to its present-day status as a Stockholm suburb, Örby maintains a distinct identity. Its architecture, educational institutions, and community organizations contribute to its unique character. The spirit of Örby endures.
