Lost in the vibrant tapestry of Christchurch New Zealand lies Orana Wildlife Park a sanctuary teeming with life. Orana Wildlife Park wasn’t always the haven it is today. It began in 1970 with a dream a vision of the South Island Zoological Society. Six years later on September 25 1976 Orana Park officially opened its gates. Its initial drawcard a unique drive-through lion reserve the first of its kind in New Zealand.
Imagine families piled into cars cautiously navigating the lion enclosure. The lions developed a taste for car parts. Some even enjoyed a perch on car roofs. This thrilling but potentially hazardous adventure ended in 1995 due to safety concerns. Today Orana’s Lion Encounter is a safer more controlled experience. It’s a nod to those early days.
Orana Park has expanded significantly over the years. The park started with a mere 28 animals representing only six species. Now it boasts over 1000 animals across more than 90 species. This incredible growth involved painstaking fundraising. Orana Wildlife Park relies heavily on gate takings and donations. Capital projects improvements and animal transfers depend entirely on donations. Over $15 million was raised by 2017. Many local businesses contributed materials equipment and expertise.
The park has faced significant challenges. In 2013 snowstorms wind damage and even an ape escape forced a ten-day closure. The 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes also impacted visitor numbers. Despite setbacks Orana Park persevered.
Orana Park is more than just a zoo. It’s a conservation center involved in breeding programs for endangered species both native and exotic. The park plays a crucial role in the recovery of the kiwi blue duck and brown teal. These birds have been bred and released back into the wild. Orana Park is also home to New Zealand’s only gorillas and orangutans a testament to its conservation efforts.
Orana Wildlife Park stands as a symbol of resilience. It is a place where conservation education and entertainment intertwine. It’s a place that offers an unforgettable journey into the heart of the animal kingdom. A visit to Orana Wildlife Park is an experience you won’t forget.
