Since 1994 the Eye Care Foundation has collaborated with the National Ophthalmology Centre in Vientiane. Their joint effort extends from hospitals to villages improving eye care nationally. They work to prevent avoidable blindness. They tackle vision impairment at every level. This collaborative effort began in earnest in 2012 expanding eye care services. This includes establishing eye camps in several provinces.
The Center plays a vital role. They provide free eye treatment programs. These programs often include cataract surgeries. Cataracts are a common problem especially among older people. A recent program partnered with the Singapore National Eye Center. It offered free eye exams and surgeries.
The Center is part of the Ministry of Health. It aims for the highest standard of health care. In the past they’ve even performed over 600 cataract surgeries in a single year. Many were for elderly patients. The China-Laos Friendship Cataract Surgery Programme also supports the Center. This program provides free cataract surgery for impoverished people.
The Center isn’t alone. The Ophthalmology Surgical Department in Bolikhamxay Province also provides services. They serve seven district hospitals and 41 health centers. Training local staff is a key element. The Center has trained many ophthalmic nurses. These nurses are vital for providing eye care and raising awareness.
While the COVID-19 pandemic caused setbacks the Center continues its work. They aim to combat the global shortage of health workers. This includes ophthalmic nurses and doctors. They are striving to improve and prevent eye diseases. This ensures access to quality eye care for everyone. The Center offers hope and healing. It embodies the ongoing commitment to better vision in Laos. It’s more than a building it is a symbol of progress.
