In 2022, Onslow College had a student body of 1,405 eager learners. But imagine their surprise when, just two years later, two of the school’s buildings were deemed earthquake-prone. That’s right, Onslow College, established in 1956, faced an unexpected challenge. The buildings in question, O Block and the gym, received shockingly low ratings on the New Building Standard (NBS) scale. O Block, housing the learning support students, received a concerning 30% rating. The gym fared even worse with a mere 15%. Can you imagine the disruption? Students were asked to work from home. Principal Sheena Millar expressed concern about the impact on NCEA exams, just around the corner. The situation highlighted years of underfunding, adding another layer of complexity to Onslow College’s journey. Despite these challenges, the spirit of Onslow College remains strong.
