A dramatic war scene unfolds before us at the Onoriamo l’Esercito Statue. This is not just a sculpture. It is a frozen moment of sacrifice.

The Onoriamo l’Esercito Statue stands tall as a monument to those fallen in the Great War. Inaugurated in 1935, it’s a powerful symbol here in Trieste.

King Victor Emmanuel III and numerous fascist officials attended the unveiling. The Onoriamo l’Esercito Statue reflects the nationalistic fervor of the time. It embodies the concept of liberation from Austro-Hungarian rule.

Attilio Selva, a local sculptor from Trieste, created this striking sculptural group. Architect Enrico del Nebbio designed the marble pedestal.

Five naked male figures are entangled in a dramatic display of wartime struggle. Three men support a wounded comrade showing their bond. Another figure shields them all representing protection. The figures of the Onoriamo l’Esercito Statue embody strength.

The Onoriamo l’Esercito Statue itself is over five meters tall. The statues are cast in iron offering a dark contrast to the white Istrian stone of the pedestal.

Engraved on the pedestal are the words “Trieste ai caduti nella guerra di liberazione MCMXV–MCMXVIII.” This translates to “Trieste to the Fallen in the Liberation War 1915–1918.” It is a dedication to those who fought.

You can find the Onoriamo l’Esercito Statue at the edge of Memorial Park. It is near the platform atop Colle di San Giusto hill. It can be reached from Via Giuseppe Rota or Piazza della Cattedrale. Viale Ragazzi del ’99 also provides access.

The Onoriamo l’Esercito Statue stands as a reminder of Trieste’s complex past. It commemorates the sacrifices made during a time of conflict and change. It serves as a symbol of liberation. The statue connects to the deep-seated nationalistic sentiments of the early 20th century.

As you stand before the Onoriamo l’Esercito Statue consider its artistic and historical context. Think about the individuals it represents. Their sacrifice shaped the city and the nation. Let us remember them.
