In 1905 a small group of believers gathered. They formed Olive Grove Baptist Church. Reverend B C Colbert led them. They purchased land from Mr Thomas Olive. He stipulated a church always remain there. The church was named in his honor.

Olive Grove Baptist Church holds a special place in Washington DC history. It’s a testament to faith and perseverance. The church faced many challenges. It also saw periods of incredible growth. Early members included T W Tillmon Mindon Bostic Sister Bertha Collins Rufus Collins and Sister Quillee M Williams.

Reverend A C Carter became the first pastor. Sister Quillee M Williams was the first mother of the church. Edmond Daggett served as the first deacon. Reverend Carter’s tenure lasted two years. Reverend J B Smith followed. He served for eight years. During his leadership the church expanded. Many found faith under his guidance.

The church continued to flourish under subsequent pastors. Reverend Thomas’s leadership saw significant growth. This included conversions restorations and baptisms. Reverend S A Jennings oversaw further expansion. He organized the Sunday School. He also added a pulpit and choir stand. New pews were purchased.

Reverend F H Hall ordained David Butler Jr and Sam Leverett as deacons. Then Reverend L Kirkland led the church from 1937. He oversaw major renovations both inside and outside. New pews electric lights and brick steps were added. He also organized a choir and two clubs.

Reverend Henry Ingram became acting pastor. He tragically passed away in 1960. During his short time he ordained six deacons. He also initiated a Youth Revival Program and a trustee board. The church saw more improvements under Reverend B F Williams. This included the addition of a vestibule and a new heating and air conditioning unit.

Reverend Robert F Leverett became pastor in 1986. He had a vision. He wanted to build a new church. This vision became reality in 1991. The old building was demolished. A new sanctuary was built. The congregation temporarily worshipped at Water Branch Baptist Church.

The new church was complete. In the following years more improvements were made. These included a steeple new drapes and a new organ. Casual dress was adopted in 1996. The church actively engaged in community outreach. They also organized numerous ministries. The church continued to grow and adapt throughout the years. It has faced hardship but maintained its faith. The story of Olive Grove Baptist Church is a powerful one. It’s a story of faith community and perseverance. It stands as a beacon in the heart of Washington DC.
